  Great question! We certainly do need to conserve places of special interest, you are right. While the world population demands energy and resources (and are arguably becoming increasingly materialistic), the impact on/risk to the environment through meeting these demands needs to be minimised.
  
  There must be consideration given to the balance of risk and consequence.
